I may be wrong, but I took the parental obliviousness as another nod to the 80s - I remember it as a staple of 90s TV, at any rate (Clarissa Explains it All, Secret World of Alex Mack, even Buffy) so I assume it was a thing in the 80s too. It wasn't really til post-2000 that parents seemed to suddenly be aware of their kids lives.

Agree here. The dad in Stranger Things is comically oblivious to everything and it's a definite nod to a lot of tropes.

ET: kids manage to hide an alien in their house from their parents. This is the biggest comparison made to Stranger Things. El is definitely the ET.
