What are your favorite period series, past and present? I'll be generous and define "period" as any series that takes place in the 1980s on back.
I really enjoy Mad Men, Freaks and Geeks, The Wonder Years, Downton Abbey (although I'm upset with Thomas' treatment), Murdoch Mysteries, Turn: Washington's Spies, and The Knick. I've recently gotten into Spartacus, The Man in the High Castle, and Dead of Summer. I'm sure I've forgotten some, but I think that's a decent start.

Oh, wow! The Wonder Years, GOOD TIMES!!!
I love Downton Abbey, but I stopped after a particular storyline and never went back. I need to finish it sometime soon... but it was really good, I miss it.
Never heard of The Man in the High Castle, is it based on the book???

I think I can guess, but which story line? I think despite its flaws, DA did have a nice finale.
TMITHC is indeed based on the book. It's an Amazon original.

before reading this i didn't know what dead of summer was about. i've been seeing ads on TV for it for a while but i had no clue what the plot was besides, apparently, summertime murders. but i just looked it up and the description makes it sound right up my alley! i might have to start watching it (that, and stranger things, but i don't have a netflix account sadly).

I started reading the book once, but I wasn't in the right mood, so I had to drop it... but I still find the premise fascination and would love to read it someday. And now I gotta see the show too!

Dead of Summer is basically a summer camp series that hearkens back to slasher/supernatural movies from the 80s. I'd liken it to light summer reading (well, as light as you can get with murder and cults). I think you'd enjoy it as long as you aren't expecting a masterpiece, lol.
I can't believe I forgot Stranger Things! It's eight hours well-spent.

I had a feeling that was the one you were referring to. I agree with you wholeheartedly and don't blame you at all for taking a break. I haven't read the book, but based on the synopsis on Wikipedia I think that while the general premise of the Axis having won WW2 is the same, there are definitely changes made to the characters and narrative to make it more series-friendly.

It's been months, though, so I SHOULD get back to watching it... I will soon. That's probably for the better. When I started the book, the premise was good, but I couldn't get into the character at all. And it was pages and pages and pages of something so boring, I dropped it. I have a feeling the series might be more interesting...
