I didn't get to see all of them (I missed Andrew Rannells and Taye Diggs) but omg JCM was THE BEST!!!! It was really cool seeing the different colors the different performers brought to it. Like NPH is such a precise performer but lacked some of the bitterness that JCM brought to it. MCH was particularly fragile and brittle, there was a softness even as he was also the most physically commanding. When JCM was in it, it was a full 20-30 min longer because of all the adlibbing he did. Darren surprised me with his performance. with a particularly confrontation take, though he did read a lot younger than the other men in the role. Which ones did you see on Broadway?

I think we are in the movie sub-board (is that what it's called?) but I definitely leapt off-topic immediately because I'm terrible like that. ANYWAY. While I can't advocate bootlegs, the film is a truly excellent representation of what JCM brought to the part. It's not identical to the show, but the guts and gristle are the same. He's a good director, too. And an extra plus - a lot of the singing was done live while shooting - I think he said the only ones they had to pre-record were the screamier songs, just so he didn't blow out his voice with take after take during shooting. But songs like Origin of Love and Wicked Little Town were done live. He has such a pretty voice and it's just lovely. And Miriam Shor, who originated Yitzhak in the Off-Broadway cast, reprises the role, and the composer Stephen Trask is a band member but he's also Tommy Gnosis's voice because Michael Pitt can't sing oops. I'm glad you got to see the show, though - wasn't that set design gorgeous?
