I thought it could be fun to see all the different places we've lived.
I grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia (a small town in the southwestern region of the state), which is in the New River Valley in the middle of the Appalachian mountains. The town would probably be pure trailer trash if it didn't also contain Virginia Tech, a pretty good polytechnical (engineering) university - the population of the town is pretty evenly split between people whose family have been there for generations, and people who are there because they either attend/ed or are employed by VTech (my mom teaches literature there, which is why we lived there). It was a very nice town to grow up in, pretty, full of greenery, good public bus system, nice downtown, though limited enough in certain cultural areas - a good place to grow up, but not a good place to stay if I want to get my theater fix.
I also lived two years in Los Angeles, California, when my dad got a job teaching at UCLA. We all moved out there, then my parents split, and some of us moved back to Virginia. Southern California is a great place to visit, especially in the winter, but it's not really a place I can see myself living.
That's primarily because of the third place I've lived - New York City. I came here to attend NYU and I just love living here. I never learned to drive, but this is the perfect place to live because that doesn't matter - the public transportation is (sometimes shitty but) mostly reliable and covers a lot of the city, but it's also a good walking city and I love walking. My job is only a 20-25 minute walk to Times Square, where I can see All The Theater, and that makes me so happy. A lot of my friends, especially friends from school, have decided NY is not a good city for them to stay in, but it's such a perfect fit for me. I'll probably stay here a good long while.
Okay, someone else's turn! Where have you lived? What was it like? Do you go back and visit? Where would you like to live! Nosy Parspys want to know!
